ARTIST STATEMENT
Wherever people are, stories live.
Physical spaces such as schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods are just like vast tangles of intertwined stories. Rumors about someone, a note secretly passed between friends, gossip or praise about colleagues—countless stories circulate, each giving rise to another.
Knowledge, laws, and systems also carry stories: stories of how they came into being, why they exist, and what purpose they serve.
What about human existence? Can we define ourselves without stories? We are always clothed in stories and clothe others with them. My practice begins with this inseparable tie between people and stories.
It unfolds across two primary dimensions: <Metaphysics> and <Unearthing>.
The first dimension <Metaphysics> explores the essential nature of stories. Stories sometimes collide, become fragmented through editing, or ultimately converge into one. <Metaphysics> investigates how these inherent qualities of stories operate within both the inner world of the individual and the external world.
The second dimension <Unearthing> builds upon this metaphysical inquiry by observing the diverse stories of the contemporary world, uncovering the unfamiliar beneath their surface, and reconstructing them so that these hidden aspects may emerge.
[ 2. SERIES STATEMENT - GEN0!, FABRIC ]
The way stories shape the world is paradoxical: they form it through collision, corrosion, and collapse; stability is achieved through destabilization; their turbulence maintains the flight of the world. For example, laws are rewritten when other stories collide with and cause the stories behind existing laws to collapse. My story here, too, collapses when perceived by people with different stories.
Collapse is not the end—it sets the world in motion.
GEN0! (Generation Zero Factorial) series captures collapse of stories within our inner worlds. The series title uses the mathematical metaphor 0! = 1. A factorial (!) is a process where a number is successively reduced and multiplied at each step, resembling a structure collapsing like dominoes. In Buddhism, śūnyatā (emptiness, 0) refers to the absence of a fixed essence; it suggests that all things are in constant flux, thereby holding the potential to assume countless forms. However, no form is permanent. Everything eventually collapses, after which the starting point of something new emerges—just as 0! (the collapse of countless forms) becomes 1 (the start of something new).
FABRIC explores the collapse of stories within the external world, as well as other narrative dynamics.

사람이 흐르는 곳에는 언제나 이야기가 고인다.
학교, 직장, 동네와 같은 물리적 공간은 이야기가 얽힌 거대한 실타래나 다름없다. 아무개에 대한 풍문, 친구가 몰래 건넨 쪽지, 상사에 대한 험담 또는 미담. 셀 수 없이 많은 이야기들이 순환하며 또 다른 이야기로 이어진다.
지식, 법규, 시스템 역시 그것이 어떻게, 왜, 무엇을 위해 존재하는지에 대한 이야기를 품고 있다.
사람의 존재는 어떠한가? 스스로를 이야기 없이 정의할 수 있는가? 사람은 항상 이야기를 입고 있으며, 이야기를 입힌다. 사람과 이야기의 불가분한 관계, 나의 작업은 여기서 시작한다.
본 작업은 크게 두 개의 차원으로 전개된다.
첫 번째 차원인 <형이상학>에서는 이야기의 본질적 속성을 탐구한다. 이야기들은 때로 충돌하고, 파편적으로 편집되며, 끝내 하나의 이야기로 수렴하기도 한다. <형이상학>은 이러한 속성이 사람의 내면 세계와 외부 세계에서 어떻게 작용하는지를 탐구한다.
두 번째 차원인 <발굴>은 앞선 형이상학적 탐구를 바탕으로 동시대의 다양한 이야기들을 관찰하고, 그 이면에 있는 낯선 것들을 발견하며, 그것들이 드러날 수 있도록 서사를 재구성하는 데 목적이 있다.
[ 2. 시리즈 노트 - GEN0!, FABRIC ]
이야기가 세상을 구축하는 방식은 모순적이다. 이야기는 충돌과 몰락을 통해 세상을 지탱한다. 그리고 세상은 이야기들의 충돌이 만들어내는 난기류 속에서 비행을 유지한다. 예를 들어, 법은 또 다른 이야기가 기존의 이야기와 충돌하고 그것을 무너뜨릴 때 다시 쓰인다. 그리고 지금 이곳에서의 나의 이야기 또한 읽히는 순간 무너진다.
하지만 무너짐은 끝이 아니다. 그것은 세상을 움직이는 동력이다.
GEN0!(제로 팩토리얼 세대) 시리즈는 내면 세계에서 일어나는 이야기들의 붕괴 과정을 포착한다. 시리즈의 타이틀은 수학적 은유인 0! = 1을 차용한다. 팩토리얼(!)은 숫자가 단계별로 줄어들며 곱해지는 과정으로, 이는 마치 구조물이 도미노처럼 무너져 내리는 모습과 닮았다. 불교에서 공(空)은 고정된 본질은 없고, 그러므로 모든 것이 수만 가지 형태로 변모할 가능성을 품고 있음을 의미한다. 그러나 그 어떤 형태도 결국 무너진다. 그리고 무너짐은 새로운 무언가의 출발점이 된다. 마치 0!(무한한 모든 형태의 무너짐)이 1(새로운 무언가의 시작)이 되듯이.
FABRIC(구조/직조) 시리즈는 외부 세계에(타자와 나 사이) 존재하는 이야기들의 충돌과 붕괴의 양상 그리고 다양한 역학관계를 탐구한다.
